We have an outstanding program that believes in providing excellent care for patients and engaging education for our medical students. Our program (the first EM residency in the University of Tennessee system) prepares residents for the future of medical care while providing them the flexibility to explore and pursue their career plans.
Surrounded by mountains, rivers and lakes, Chattanooga and Hamilton County, Tennessee, offer a little bit of everything – the fastest internet service in the western hemisphere, a thriving innovation business district and a booming downtown along the Tennessee River brimming with shops, dining and history. Awarded Outdoor Magazine’s “Best Town Ever” title for two years, the Scenic City always delivers. Our city is home to world class outdoor activities including hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, rafting, and even hang gliding if you’re adventurous enough. If the outdoors are not your thing, the city is also home to many great restaurants, craft breweries, an active live music scene including Moon River and the Riverbend Festival concert series, and a variety of museums including The Hunter Art museum and The Tennessee Aquarium. Families and adults alike always enjoy the Children’s Discovery Museum.
Two aspects of training at our program also make it unique. First is our facility: the Erlanger Health System is a well-run healthcare system. Erlanger is chartered under a county health authority but operates efficiently as an urban, community and academic medical center across six locations in Tennessee and western North Carolina. Our main campus in downtown Chattanooga sees over 90,000 adult and pediatric patients yearly and is the only Level I trauma center within a 120-mile radius.
Because of its wide geographic coverage, we have the opportunity to treat a wide variety of pathology from all types of trauma including blunt, penetrating, industrial, rural/farming etc, to rare genetic disorders and late stage presentations of common illness. After training at our site, we feel comfortable that you will have knowledge that translates to any future practice.
Erlanger Health System provides a tremendous variety of patients and a wealth of learning experiences. Our Emergency Department is preparing for the future of value-based care with the implementation of patient navigators and case management workers within the department. Emergency Medicine is well respected as a department, and we have excellent interdepartmental and interdisciplinary working relationships. We have recently partnered with the City of Chattanooga and Hamilton County to try to provide outreach and improve care for our undomiciled population. We have improved the coordination of resources and helped healthcare delivery to this at risk population.
The second major aspect of our program is our faculty. We have a diverse faculty with a range of interests and experiences that help guide our students and residents. We have started fellowships in Emergency Medicine Ultrasound and Emergency Medical Services, and we have an active HBO/Wound Care Center. We run the EMS programs for the entire 14 county region. Members of our department serve in a variety of leadership roles within the hospital and continue to be active in changing the future of our specialty.
During your month at Erlanger, whether interested in EM or still considering other specialties, we hope to expand your medical knowledge and skills as in emergency care while giving you time to explore what living in Chattanooga could offer. Click here to learn more about our residency program.
